Practice with the new online format of the May 28 - June 8 GAMSAT

Postby goldstanda3269 » Thu Apr 02, 2020 3:11 pm

Due to the extraordinary measures that ACER has instituted related to COVID-19 (coronavirus), Gold Standard GAMSAT is currently adding questions to our online exam GS-Free and altering the online timer to reflect what is currently public knowledge regarding the new online GAMSAT format ( May 28 to June 8 ). We now have the 'new' GS-Free live and hope to have 1 or 2 more mock exams live and online in May.

Here is ACER's updated booklet: https://gamsat.acer.org/files/GAMSAT_In ... y_2020.pdf

New online GAMSAT format structure and timing:

Section 1: 40 questions, 60 minutes
Section 2: 2 questions, 65 minutes
Section 3: 60 questions, 120 minutes

Reading time is incorporated into the exam time so technically Section 2, which is normally 60 minutes of exam time + 5 minutes of reading time, is not longer than the previous, paper version.

The test will now be conducted over two testing weeks:
• Window I: 28 May – 2 June - GAMSAT Sections 1 & 2
• Window II: 3 June – 8 June - GAMSAT Section 3

Note: Both Section 1 and Section 3 have fewer total questions than the paper version (overall shorter exam) but significantly more time per question. To be precise, the paper GAMSAT Section 1 provides an average of 1.3 minutes per question whereas the online version provides 1.5 minutes per question including reading time. The paper GAMSAT Section 3 provides an average of 1.5 minutes per question whereas the online version provides an incredible 2 minutes per question including reading time.

Gold Standard GAMSAT has 10 years of experience providing online GAMSAT practice tests.

After we have completed the new GS-Free (the new test will remain free to access), we will construct 1 or 2 more tests with the new online format from content from our exams GS-1, 2 and from other content from our question bank of over 5000 MCQs.

More announcements will follow.

Keep safe.

Postby goldstanda3269 » Thu Apr 23, 2020 1:27 am

After many programming and staff challenges, we will be ready to release a free online GAMSAT practice test formatted for the May/June exam later this week (GS-Free with additional questions added). It has been an exhaustive process and we really have not received much buzz requesting more than that so we will have to reassess whether to proceed with much more than that.

We will also release 2 videos specific to the new online exam in the days to come.

Good luck with your studies!

Our programmers have been working on the scaled score for the new GS-Free. Hopefully, later this week, your GS-Free past scores and future scores will be automatically converted to an estimate of your scaled score. Medical schools set cutoffs and averages based on scaled scores, not based on your raw scores (how many correct divided by the total number of questions) nor your percentile ranking.

We are currently constructing our 2nd exam with the new format: Based on GS-2, it will be the revised version GS-2R. Hopefully it will be live on the Tests webpage when you sign in next week (for anyone who should have access to GS-2, you will have access to both the traditional format and the new shortened May-June format).

Next week, we hope to begin construction of 2 more exams based on GS-1. Thus there will be a total of 4 new-format mock exams: GS-Free, GS-2R, GS-1A and GS-1B.

On May 17, we will have a free webinar to discuss the worked solutions for the most difficult Section 3 practice questions from GS-Free. More announcements to follow.

Many of you know already, if you need assistance understanding the worked solutions to any of ACER's 440 MCQs from their official GAMSAT materials, you can find them here: https://www.youtube.com/user/GoldStandardGAMSAT

Good luck with your studies and stay safe!

We hope to have GS-2R live within 12 hours from now, and then GS-1A and GS-1B by Friday.

We will have a webinar to discuss the toughest questions from the new online format GS-Free (Section 3) next Sunday: https://www.wiziq.com/online-class/6716 ... ar-may2020

Good luck with your studies!

Hello,

has the programming for the new GS Free Scaled score system been set up? What I mean is are the scaled score we are receiving right now accurate? Because when I work with the older format, my scaled scores are sitting around 68, but for the new ones they dropped down to 58. I was wondering whether this is an issue with the programming or whether it's just that my scores have dropped.

Thank You

Good question! But, you may find the answer unsatisfying...

Our traditional format practice tests have been tested with students in classrooms in the 3 primary GAMSAT countries for years and so the scoring is reasonably accurate. All new online exams (shortened format) have not been field tested. Scores come with ranges due to the uncertainty and there is no scientific way that, after only a few days of testing, we can confirm the accuracy.

In addition, of course, I can not comment on whether or not the topics happened to be less familiar to you as compared to previous exams.

It's difficult to avoid focussing on scaled scores. However, as best as possible, focus on the problem-solving skills while carefully reviewing worked solutions, take brief notes, and review those notes from the beginning every 2-3 days. Practice, learn, revise, and then practice again.

We understand that the answer may not be satisfying, but perhaps you can see why ACER provides no conversions for any of their 5 eBooks.

Keep up the studies, you can see the finishing line!

We are now working on the programming of the new online format exams so that there is essentially just one column.

It will be uncomfortable! After all, it won't be as convenient as our regular online GS exams which permit highlighting, strikeout for process of elimination, passages which are viewable alongside questions - all features to better simulate the real, traditional paper format GAMSAT.

Unfortunately, ACER currently has stated that none of those features will be part of the May-June GAMSAT so we are removing those features from our new format exams. If you are preparing for Sept. or March 2021, don't worry, you will have access to both formats just in case.
