I did an essay in timed conditions, long shot, but any feedback would be grand!


Intellectual freedom is our liberty to learn and understand the world. Every individual has a drive to learn, whether they know it or not. Everybody has the ability to gain knowledge, and from this improve themselves and people around them with their new information, we just have to encourage them.

In the British HMC Prison Service education is not yet a necessity. Only since the 1990s are prison services starting to introduce education. Prisons are slowly joining introducing education in to their curricular, but not all are yet. Due to the independence of British prisons, they are free to decide within their own right, what they want to provide prisoners, therefore, this doesn't have to be education. They can simply provide the basic necessities of human life and human rights; shelter, food, medicine, water and hygiene amenities.

The American Library Association stated that 'Intellectual freedom is the right of every individual to both seek and receive information from all points of view without restriction.'. Therefore, this would mean that intellectual freedom should also be provided to prisoners and the means of information provision available. The essay will outline why prisoners are not exempt from this right, and why providing education should be compulsory in the prison service.

You could argue that prisoners have no right to exercise their rights of freedom in prison because they have done such a crime to deserve deprivation of liberty. Yes taking away education, would be a punishment, for some more than others that is. Therefore, spending public money on educators and resources for prisoners education would be a waste and instead it should be spend on education for the public, who haven't done such a crime.

However, the prison service should be working towards rehabilitation and ensuring prisoners are taught the right behaviour and skills to leave the prison without re-offending. Education can do this. If prisoners are taught about the world, about sociology, psychology and philosophy in particular, they can learn more about themselves and the workings of the world. They can be released with a more understanding and respectful manor. Not only that, but it can encourage prisoners to move on to higher education of work-based learning and thus contribute to society by becoming employed after serving their sentence.

Prisoners are more often than not of the lower classes. It is a sad fact that most prisoners were unemployed, homeless and often living in uncaring, violent environments. They have often committed crimes because of their difficult situation and thus needed a release or to earn a few pounds. Sometimes, some prisoners commit crimes simply because the life in prison is easier than life on the streets. Therefore, you could argue that these people who are most likely uneducated, are not interested in education and therefore again, spending money to educate them would be a waste of public spending. They have simply never been encouraged to gain an education, they never had the family support at home perhaps or their school was badly funded.

However, I believe every person can enjoy education. Everybody will love to learn something, everybody has an interest, they just have to find it. By educating prisoners who have never been properly educated before, they have a chance to find their thing to love. When people have a hobby or an interest, it can be a release and can lead on to more positive things. Education may never have been emphasised in their childhood; therefore, this is their opportunity. For example, a prisoner learns in human geography class about the lack of water supplies in places like Gambia and Lenovo. They go to the library in the prison and find a book about water supplies around the world. They build compassion for people who are less privileged than themselves. They find an interest in how to help others and try to find out what they can do. From prison they could then set up charity donations and spread the word to other prisoners. they could eventually leave the prison and volunteer in some charity work whereby they raise money and awareness to the public, or even go abroad and help the villages without water themselves. This is just an example of how education can open people’s minds to the world, possibilities and the ability of one’s self to make a difference.

In conclusion, I believe that education has the ability to improve behaviour and spark interests in prisoners. Spending money on prison education is not a waste of public resource. In the long run these people will be walking amongst us once more, and they will have more opportunity to contribute to society if they get an education. They would be wasting valuable time in prison if they were not getting an education. After all, in the real world outside of the prison, we are learning new things every day. We're exposed to the media, to books, to computers and to day to day communication and happenings. We are constantly stimulated, whereas they are not. they can only learn from fellow prisoners and guards about information and behaviour. Therefore, introducing education will improve their informative brain.
